Markup language used to create web pages and web applications. Provides structural semantics for text and constructs for images or other objects.

History

In 1989, physicist Tim Berners-Lee proposed an Internet-based hypertext system via a memo. He went on to specify HTML and wrote the browser and server software in late 1990. The first publicly available description of HTML was a document called HTML Tags which was first mentioned by Berners-Lee on the Internet in 1991.
